Andrew Marvell (1621-1678)

Andrew Marvell was born in Winestead-in-Holderness, Yorkshire, the son of a vicar. He was educated at grammar school in Hull, and at Trinity College, Cambridge.

After spending severals years in Europe, he worked as a private tutor. In 1657 he became John Milton's assistant as Cromwell's Latin Secretary and after the Restoration entered parliament as MP for Hull, writing vehement satires and pamphlets against Charles II and his ministers.

Although known in his day mostly as a political satirist, he is now primarily remembered for his metaphysical verse.
